Shopify checkout drop-off: how to find where you're losing sales

If traffic to your Shopify store is steady or growing but sales aren't, the leak is usually between add to basket and purchase. Find the exact step where people drop out, then watch real sessions to see why. Guessing at fixes wastes time.

This is the process we use with e-commerce clients.

Step 1: Map the funnel with numbers

Pull these figures for the last 30 days and the same period last year:

  • Sessions
  • Sessions with an add to basket
  • Sessions that reached checkout
  • Sessions that completed a purchase

Shopify's analytics shows most of this in its conversion reporting. GA4 can show it too, if e-commerce events are set up properly.

Work out the percentage that moves from each step to the next. The biggest drop, or the step that has got worse compared with last year, is where to look first.

Step 2: Split it by device and country

A checkout that works well on desktop can be painful on a phone. Check the same funnel for mobile and desktop separately.

If you sell abroad, split it by country too. International shoppers often drop out when they see delivery costs, duties or VAT for the first time at checkout. This is a common pattern on high-value stores, where the price on the product page isn't the price overseas shoppers are asked to pay.

Step 3: Watch real sessions

Numbers show where people leave. Session recordings show why. Tools like Hotjar or Microsoft Clarity let you watch anonymised recordings of people moving through your store.

Filter for sessions that reached checkout but didn't buy, and watch twenty or thirty of them. Patterns appear quickly: a discount code box that sends people off to search for codes, a delivery option that is unclear, a form field that keeps throwing an error, a payment method that is missing.

Step 4: Check the common causes

These come up again and again:

  • Unexpected costs. Delivery, duties or fees that only appear at checkout. Show them earlier.
  • Forced account creation. Let people check out as a guest.
  • Missing payment options. Express options such as Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal reduce typing, especially on mobile.
  • Slow pages. Too many apps loading scripts can slow the store down. Remove apps you no longer use.
  • Lack of trust. On expensive products, people look for reviews, returns information and a real phone number before they pay.
  • Delivery uncertainty. Say clearly when the order will arrive.

Step 5: Fix one thing at a time and measure it

Make the change most likely to help first, then compare the funnel before and after over a fair period. If you change five things at once, you won't know which one worked.

Step 6: Recover the ones who leave

Some people will always leave. Make sure you have abandoned checkout emails running, ideally a short sequence rather than one email, and remarketing ads on Meta and Google for people who reached checkout. These are some of the cheapest sales you will make.

Don't forget the tracking

If your tracking double counts or misses purchases, your conversion rate will look wrong and you might fix the wrong thing. Our guide to GA4 e-commerce tracking explains what to check.

Frequently asked questions

Why do customers abandon checkout on Shopify?

Common reasons include unexpected delivery costs or duties, forced account creation, missing payment options, slow pages and a lack of trust signals on higher value products.

Do abandoned checkout emails work?

They are one of the cheapest ways to recover sales. A short sequence of two or three emails usually does better than a single reminder.

How do I see why people leave my checkout?

Use session recording tools such as Hotjar or Microsoft Clarity, filter for sessions that reached checkout but did not buy, and look for repeated problems.
