Google Ads vs Meta Ads: which should your business use first?
Use Google Ads first if people already search for what you sell. Use Meta Ads first if they don't search for it yet, or if your product sells best when people see it. Most businesses end up running both, but the order you start in matters when the budget is limited.
The core difference
Google Ads captures demand. Someone types "physiotherapist near me" or "buy running shoes size 10" and your ad appears at the moment they are looking. Intent is high, and so is competition for the best searches.
Meta Ads creates demand. Facebook and Instagram show your ad to people who match an audience, whether or not they were looking for you that day. You are interrupting their scrolling, so the ad has to earn attention.
Neither is better. They do different jobs.
When Google Ads should come first
- People already search for your product or service by name or category.
- The purchase is often urgent or planned: trades, healthcare, legal services, training courses, B2B services.
- You sell to a specific local area and people search with a location.
- Your product is hard to explain in a quick image or video.
Training providers are a good example. People search for a specific course, often with a date or location in mind. Being there when they search matters more than building awareness.
When Meta Ads should come first
- Your product is new, and people don't yet know to search for it.
- It sells on looks, lifestyle or a clear visual demonstration.
- You can define your audience well by interests, life stage or behaviour.
- The price is low enough for an impulse purchase, or you are building an email list.
Cost and conversion: what to expect
Clicks from Google search are often more expensive, but they come from people already looking, so they tend to convert at a higher rate. Clicks from Meta are often cheaper, but more of those people are browsing, so conversion rates are usually lower.
That is why comparing cost per click between the two channels tells you very little. Compare cost per sale or cost per lead, measured the same way on both.
How they work together
Once each channel works on its own, they support each other:
- Meta Ads build awareness, which tends to increase branded searches on Google.
- Google Ads capture people who heard of you through Meta and later search for you.
- Remarketing on Meta brings back people who clicked a Google ad but didn't buy.
This is also why last-click reporting can undervalue Meta. Look at total sales and total cost across both channels, not only what each platform claims.
A simple way to decide
Answer three questions:
- Do people search for what you sell? If yes, start with Google.
- Does your product sell better when people can see it? If yes, Meta deserves a test.
- Do you have conversion tracking in place on your site? If not, fix that before either.
If the budget only allows one channel, start with the one closest to the purchase, prove it pays, then add the second.
What about ChatGPT Ads?
ChatGPT Ads are a newer option that sits between the two: people are asking questions and researching, but they aren't typing a search into Google. They are worth a measured test once your main channels are working. We cover that in our guide to ChatGPT Ads in the UK.

Frequently asked questions
Is Google Ads or Facebook Ads cheaper?
Clicks on Meta are often cheaper than clicks on Google search, but they usually convert at a lower rate. The only fair comparison is cost per sale or cost per lead, measured the same way on both platforms.
Can I run Google Ads and Meta Ads at the same time?
Yes, and once both work on their own they tend to support each other. Make sure you look at total results across both, because each platform will claim credit for some of the same sales.
Which is better for local businesses?
If people search for your service with a location, such as a trade or a clinic, Google Ads usually comes first. Meta Ads work well alongside it for local offers, events and remarketing.
